We all want to avoid the dreaded nursing home. But successfully "aging in place" requires support. Learn what CYA is doing.
Gerontologists and other health care professional call it “aging in place.” It basically describes the idea of staying in your own home or apartment instead of moving to a nursing home as you get older.
Aging in place is a pretty simple notion. It's what people have always preferred to do—if they're able.
The real crux of “aging in place,” is having support systems. Successful aging really depends on having all the right support. Family support, community support, spiritual support, and financial support are all elements. When these things mesh together, it greatly improves the prospects for “aging in place.” People are often forced into a nursing home because a key element of support is missing.
Understanding and defining aging support systems is an area of much study today. We know that successfully aging depends on many things. But, we can't say there's one special formula. The availability of adult day care in a community certainly seems to be important. Among other things, adult day supplements the care that family members can provide. Secondly, it allows caregivers some occasional respite. Thirdly, it provides stimulation for elderly individuals who otherwise could be isolated, withdrawn, and depressed. The benefits of adult day care are indeed numerous.
The Catholic Youth Association is committed to the ideals of aging in place—through programs for well seniors and through adult day care.
