The Catholic Youth Association of Pittsburgh (CYA) serves children and adults. CYA's adult day care program is housed on the 1st floor; the agency's Tiny Tots Program is on the building's 2nd floor. Having programs for children and adults closely so closely connected has been uniquely successful for both.
Most adult day care programs are extensions of nursing homes. At the Catholic Youth Association in Lawrenceville, adult day care happens in the same building as kids' programs. This allows for seniors and children to regular interact. Several times a year, usually around the holidays, the children in CYA's Tiny Tots stage shows for the seniors, or bring them paintings or hand-made gifts. This has proven to be a real boon to both the younsters and the oldsters. According to Mary Ann Heneroty, CYA CEO, the presence of the children enlivens the seniors and keeps things interesting for them. The kids benefit too. Their efforts have a real purpose are warmly received by the adult day care clients.
The atmosphere at CYA is completely different from than of a nursing home. It's a lot more like a home. There's soft lighting, comfortable chairs, and the comings and going of young children. If someone in your family would benefit from this type of care and settings, please contact us at 412-621-3342.
